Upon Slovenia's accession to the European Union, the Government Office for European Affairs has taken on a new role. It acts as a coordinating body between Slovenia and EU institutions, in particular as regards implementation of agreements and adopting the acquis communautaire. The Office also has an important role in the negotiations with the EU accession countries.
