The Government Office for European Affairs cooperates with the representatives of the European Economic and Social Committee and the Committee of the Regions, and with the Slovenian Members of the European Parliament.
THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT
In the past fifty years, the European Parliament, one of the five EU institutions, has developed into a strong co-decision making body. Together with the EU Council, the European Parliament co-decides on the majority of EU questions. With implementation of the Lisbon Treaty, the Parliament’s power of co-decion will be expanded to all European policies, with the only exemption of the Common Foreign and Security Policy. Therefore, 785 European Parliamentarians, including the seven Slovenian members, play an important role in the legislative decision-making process, which is eventually transposed into the national law. Hence, close cooperation with the European Parliament, in particular with Slovenian Parliamentarians, dissemination of information on positions of the European Parliament Committees to the line ministries, as well as good political relations represent an important aspect of Slovenia’s policy in European affairs.
